Poly-L-lysine dissolves fibrillar aggregation of the Alzheimer beta-amyloid peptide in vitro.

Advisor Comment: Developing compounds to inhibit Aβ aggregation, or to resolubilize aggregated Aβ could represent a viable therapeutic approach for AD. The apparent potency of these compounds in dissolving Aβ fibrils is striking. However, it is also important to realize that not all beta-pleated sheet structures are necessarily bad - such structures are important for proper functioning of many proteins and receptors. Hence, it is possible that non-specific amyloid breakers will cause too many side effects to be useful therapeutically.
