There has been, for obvious reasons, a tremendous research effort investigating the role of tau protein and synuclein protein as the building blocks for filaments in neruofibrillary tangles, Lewy bodies and glial cytoplasmic inclusions. However, it is nice that Dr. Cairns and colleagues remind us of the days when neuronal intermediate filaments (neurofilaments, internexin, and peripherin) ruled. This nicely done tale of mice and men summarizes the current research regarding this interesting, but sometimes forgotten cytoskeletal proteins. Oh, by the way, Dr. Cairns talks a little about tau, too.
