  1. This paper describes a progression of NFT pathology along a stereotyped, hierarchical and morphologically sequential pathway. The progression was categorized into 10 stages according to the brain regions affected, starting with transentorhinal cortex and ending with all neocortical areas being affected. The progression described appears to be grossly confirmatory of the Braak staging. The authors state 'In all cases studied here, stage 7 individuals' (two polymodal association areas affected by tau pathologic states) were cognitively impaired. There is no biochemistry apparent in the abstract.
