  1. Understanding which elements represent the core of the filamentous synuclein is important because it suggests a region that can be targeted for studying aggregation. The results observed by Miake and colleagues are consistent with those observed by previous researchers, such as Giasson et al (J Biol Chem 276: 2380-6, 2001) and Paik et at (FEBS Letters 421: 73-6, 1998) who identified a hydrophobic regions in a-synuclein that are important for aggregation. The current study provides a critical link between the studies performed in vitro, and the human pathological condition.
