This is a nice paper that ties together inflammation and the cell cycle in AD. Although the authors suggest that Cox-2 may be involved in cell cycle activation and hence neurodegeneration in AD, they also report an inverse correlation with amyloid deposition—the event thought to trigger the inflammatory response in AD. It is also possible that cell cycle activation in AD occurs independently of Cox-2, and that NSAIDS are beneficial because of their inhibition of Cox-2 which suppresses activation of cyclin D1 and E.
