Research Models
APOE Knock-out
Synonyms: APOE KO, APOE -/-, APOE TM1
Species: Mouse
Genes: APOE
Modification: APOE: Knock-Out
Disease Relevance: Alzheimer's Disease
Strain Name: B6.129P2-Apoetm1Unc N11
Genetic Background: 129 x C57BL/6, back-crossed to C57BL/6
Availability: Taconic: Stock# APOE-M and APOE-F
Modification Details
Inactivation of the endogenous mouse APOE by homologous recombination and insertion of a neomycin cassette.
Other Phenotypes
ApoE is undetectable in the plasma of these homozygous APOE knock-out mice. They are viable and appear healthy. They have elevated plasma cholesterol compared to wild-type animals (Piedrahita et al., 1992). They develop artherosclerotic lesions which progress to occlusions of coronary artery by eight months (Zhang et al., 1992).
