The authors leverage cutting-edge tools to large sequencing datasets in order to examine Variable Number Tandem Repeats, which, given their repetitive nature, have been traditionally very challenging to study at scale.
The authors find multiple VNTRs that associate with AD risk. This work adds to recent work from multiple other groups that have identified associations of tandem repeats to risk of AD. It will be interesting to see how these VNTRs may associate in larger cohorts, particularly multi-ancestry cohorts, and to understand how these VNTRs drive AD risk.
