MCI-AD vs MCI-Stable: α-synuclein (CSF)
Alpha-synuclein is a pre-synaptic protein that accumulates in Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites. The literature suggests that the concentration of α-synuclein in the CSF of individuals with Parkinson’s disease is below control levels. In contrast, CSF α-synuclein is marginally elevated in people with Alzheimer’s disease compared with control subjects. Meta-analysis of three comparisons showed a non-significant trend towards elevated levels of α-synuclein in the cerebrospinal fluid at baseline in people with mild cognitive impairment who went on to develop Alzheimer’s dementia compared with those who had not declined at follow-up (effect size = 1.340, p = 0.058).
