Featuring researchers who are part of the largest and most extensive, worldwide research network investigating dominantly inherited Alzheimer’s disease.

At this free one-day event, Alzheimer and other dementia researchers will be given opportunities to network through panel discussion, lunch, poster sessions and much more.

The day will enhance your ability to share research, exchange data and foster collaboration while gaining insight into ground-breaking research on dementia occurring close to home and internationally. Researchers will share and discuss their research in the Corwin Pavillion at the University of California-Santa Barbara.

The 2013 Symposium will focus on the Alzheimer’s Prevention Initiative (API). This international, five-year research initiative is a public-private consortium established to conduct research in an extended family in Antioquia, Colombia, in South America where potentially promising Alzheimer strategies are being identified, based on new information about the initial stages and events in the brain that lead to Alzheimer's, as well as data from studies of genetic and environmental risk factors.

University of California-Santa Barbara's own Kenneth S. Kosik, MD, recipient of a 1991 Alzheimer's Association Zenith Fellows Award, played a pivotal role in the early 1990s documenting that the Colombian family's symptoms are due to Alzheimer's disease. He also helped raise awareness of the family's existence among the international research community. Kosik is a member of our Chapter's board of directors.
