Since the late 1990's there has been an increasing interest in the use of immunotherapy for neurodegenerative disorders. Early clinical studies in Alzheimer's disease, targeting the amyloid-beta peptide, have shown promising results and are now being followed by a number of immunotherapy trials. The development in this field has spurred further immunotherapeutic strategies targeting other pathogenic molecules such as tau, alpha-synuclein and huntingtin. These efforts will hopefully result in new treatments for disorders such as frontotemporal dementia, Parkinson's disease and Huntington's disease. Efficient treatment against neurodegeneration requires intervention at an early disease stage. Thus, there is a need for novel biomarkers that can provide improved diagnostic methods for the future. At this two-day symposia, world-leading scientists are for the third time gathered in Uppsala to discuss the latest results in the field of immunotherapy and biomarkers for neurodegenerative disorders.
