Alzheimer's Disease vs Control: α-synuclein (Plasma and Serum)
Alpha-synuclein is a pre-synaptic protein that accumulates in Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites. The literature suggests that the concentration of α-synuclein in the CSF of individuals with Parkinson’s disease is below control levels. In contrast, CSF α-synuclein is marginally elevated in people with Alzheimer’s disease compared with control subjects. Only a handful of studies have measured α-synuclein in the blood of people with AD. Meta-analysis of three eligible studies did not find a difference in the levels of α-synuclein in the blood of people with AD compared with control subjects.
