Background

Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), well known to inhibit cyclooxygenase activity and thereby reduce inflammation through reduced prostaglandin synthesis. Ibuprofen is part of a subset of NSAIDs that were found to reduce Aβ42 levels by modulating γ-secretase activity, and is therefore considred a γ-secretase modulator.

Findings

Epidemiologic studies demonstrate that long-term use of NSAIDs is associated with a reduced risk for the development of Alzheimer disease.
