Summary

These mice express human apolipoprotein E4 (APOE4) driven by the human glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) promoter in the absence of endogenous mouse APOE. Human ApoE4 protein is detectable in glia and neuropil in a pattern that is similar to endogenous murine ApoE expression in wild-type animals. Expression is not observed in neuronal cell bodies. ApoE4 was observed during developmental stages and in mature animals. Secreted ApoE4 was detectable from primary cultures of forebrain astrocytes (Sun et al., 1998).
