Neuropathology of Alzheimer disease: pathognomonic but not pathogenic.

This paper appears to suggest it is time to move beyond emphasis on the pathological stigmata of AD described more than 100 years ago. It is now clear that whatever the "first" cause of AD, there are states of tau and of Aβ that precede frank neurofibrillary tangles (NFT) and senile plaques (SP) that are major culprits in the disease. In fact, molecules that intervene between NFT and SP and the neurobiological/cognitive deficits of disease are starting to become known.
