  1. It seems this study correlates well with the unbiased stereology study of Mark West et al. (see West et al., 1994), which showed age-related loss of neurons in subiculum but not in CA1. In AD, on the other hand, there was age-related loss of neurons in both CA1 and subiculum. The suggestion by La Joie et al. that "assessment of hippocampal subfields may improve the discrimination between normal and pathological aging" appears to have merit.
