Amyloid-beta aggregates cause alterations of astrocytic metabolic phenotype: impact on neuronal viability.
J Neurosci. 2010 Mar 3;30(9):3326-38.
PubMed.
Beta amyloid accumulation into neuronal mitochondria has been well established to be associated with mitochondrial dysfunction. This report indicates that astrocytic mitochondria and metabolism are not immune to the deleterious effects of Aβ. Consistent with the important role astrocytes play in providing energetic substrate to neurons, Aβ-induced dysfunction of astrocytic metabolism has dire consequences for neuron survival.
